FRENCH'S® Worcestershire Sauce The origin of Worcestershire Sauce is a rather bizarre story - basically, it was a cross-cultural mistake! The history of Worcestershire Sauce dates back to India where Lord Marcus Sandys was serving as Governor General of Bengal. Upon his retirement, Lord Sandys returned home to the town (also known as "shire") of Worcester, England. In 1835, he commissioned two local chemists to make a batch of his favorite sauce from a recipe he brought back from India. Even though Lord Sandys was satisfied with the Indian Sauce, the two chemists considered it to be "unpalatable, red-hot fire water" and relegated the sauce they made for themselves to the cellar. During the annual spring cleanup, the two chemists discovered the Indian Sauce that lay forgotten to ferment in the cellar. Before discarding, they tasted the Indian Sauce and to their astonishment the "unpalatable, red-hot fire water" had mellowed into an aromatic, piquant and flavorful liquid. The two chemists hastily purchased the recipe from Lord Sandy and bottled it for sale. The "Worcestershire Sauce" quickly became a customer favorite.
Nowadays, FRENCH'S® Worcestershire Sauce is a key
ingredient in a variety of great dishes, from Caesar Salad to Party
mix to Bloody Marys. FRENCH'S® Worcestershire Sauce
is a versatile flavor enhancer and spirited finishing sauce - great
for adding that special touch to all of your meals. It offers a
wide range of uses including applications in many of today's hottest
food trends.
